Really, Why Do People Like Succulents So Much?

Hey SUCCAs! Thank you for revisiting my weekly blog about succulents! It has been a week since I posted my ‘About Me’ blog, and if you read it last week, I must admit that to this day nothing has changed. I haven’t been to the plant store to grab a succulent and my interest in this plant is still very low. So, this week I decided to ask the question, “Why do people like succulents so much?” I mean honestly, are they worth the hype? Should I hop on the bandwagon and purchase one just to join the cool kids? Is it just me who believes that succulents are overrated? Well, I was pretty motivated on finding the answers to these questions and so I took matters into my own hands.

I decided to look up articles on google and talk to my fellow friends who have owned, killed, or at least had an interest in succulent plants. A HUGE reoccurring fact that appeared on every website and came up in every conversation was the maintenance of the plant. Apparently, these things require less watering and don’t prune. This situation sort of reminded me of how some people decide to buy a cat instead of a dog due to their low maintenance. A cat just does its business in the litter box and chills on its own, while a dog requires constant attention. Anyways, I guess what I’m trying to say is that not having to water a plant everyday does seem like my cup of tea. I’m not good at remembering to water a plant, in fact, I’m not good at remembering anything. So, maybe a succulent is the plant for me.

Another reason that I found them to be so popular was because they have many different creative uses. I didn’t know that people used succulents as simple house decorations or let alone wedding centerpieces. What. I was just informed that even stores, coffee shops, and restaurants put succulents in little containers as a visual display to their customers. This is understandable due to their low maintenance, but wouldn’t a sunflower be cuter on display rather than a succulent? Maybe that’s just me. When I look at a succulent, I don’t see it any differently than other green plants.

So, my fellow SUCCAs, even after all of my research on what’s so great about this plant, I came out with little to nothing. Low maintenance and decorations. Yes, the low maintenance part sounds very appealing, but would I rather spend my money on a Venti Vanilla Iced Coffee or a Succulent? As of now, I’d take the coffee please.
