It Succs to Sell

Hi everybody! Welcome back to our blog! I really appreciate you all checking out these weekly succulent posts, it means a lot that you are all so interested in our content! Now, as a college sophomore, I am extremely broke, and I know there are young adults all over the world who are looking to make money while in school just like me. Let me be clear though, this post is not simply for young adults, and it is not only for those who are financially struggling either! This is for anyone who is looking for a little side hustle and has a passion for succulents. And to be frank, it really should be everyone who is looking for a little side hustle because as bleak as it is, you never know what could happen to your day job. And if you are about to tell me that it’s totally secure, no questions asked, you will always have this dream job of yours… it is undeniably nice to have a bit of extra income, so just get yourself a side hustle okay? With that little rant over now, let’s talk about the genius money-making side hustle that all of us on this site can be passionate about…

SELLING. SUCCULENTS.

Oh yes. Those tiny plants you adore so much? Yeah, you can make money off of them.

With the popularity of succulents absolutely booming right now, there is no better time to take advantage of that and start selling! People say that once you start growing succulents that it is hard to stop, so you might as well not try to fight it and just keep growing! This really works out in the favor of the seller because it is likely easiest to sell the succulents that you propagate yourself. Seems pretty simple so far, right? Although it is, there are some things you need to educate yourself on before you can jump right in.

1- You will need to learn everything that you possibly can about succulent propagation. This is the foundation for your business so you must make sure you are doing it right. What kinds of succulents are best to grow for this? Does the season matter? How many succulents can you plant together in the same soil before all the nutrients are gone? Is it better to grow them inside or outside before selling? These are all vital questions to ask before beginning your succulent selling side hustle.

2- You are going to need to figure out how are you planning to sell your plants. This is something that you may need to look at other blogs for, to educate yourself on how other people packaged their succs together. Are you going to sell yours individually? Are you going to make packages for people and sell your succulents in pre-designed bundles? Are you going to sell them with pots already for people or just temporary containers? It is up to you, and you can have some variety with it, but it is definitely something you want to figure out before you start selling.

3- How are you going to keep the bugs away from your succulents while still keeping them organic and pesticide-free? This is very important if you are looking to reach a crowd of consumers who value everything being all-natural, and most people who are buying succulents online probably do fall into this category.

4- Another aspect to this whole succulent selling thing is figuring out where the heck you are going to do this at. We keep saying “online” but that is way too vague with the way that the internet has taken off. So, more specifically, what platform are you going to use to make your succulent selling dreams come true? The most popular option is easily Etsy, then probably Pinterest, with Craigslist and Kijiji right behind them. If your business really starts taking off on there though, you may want to look into creating your own website if you’re feeling bold enough, and there are tons of tools to help you out with that if you don’t have enough background knowledge already.

5- Finally, we have come to what is likely the most important topic of this whole dang thing… once people buy your succulents, how are you going to package them up and ship them? You are definitely going to need to educate yourself on which plants don’t mind being dried out completely so that you can wrap them up in newspaper or brown paper bags and ship them across the country that way, because not all plants are equipped with that ability and can still be revived afterwards. Luckily for us though, this little method does work for most succulents, so with a bit of double-checking, you should be totally safe.

Do not make the mistake of letting this fun little monetary boost of a side hustle stress you out completely as you attempt to accomplish everything under the sun though. I know it is easy to get carried away with all of the research and gardening and potting bundles for people, but understand that it is okay to start small, and it is okay if this monetization doesn’t take off right away! Just know that you are doing your best and all the extra succulents can be saved for yourself and used for crafting, so that’s a total plus!

No matter what though, I hope this post helped you out on starting your succulent selling journey, and that you now know exactly what questions to ask to ensure the most SUCCessful baby plant business ever. Good luck!
