5 Stores' Succulents Ranked and Reviewed

A few days ago, I went on a spree to find which stores in the area had the best succulent selections. I visited 5 stores (actually 6, but Menards was out of succulents, and I didn't think it was fair to give them a bad review without even seeing their normal succulent selection). I live in Muncie, IN, so I tried to mostly visit places that have multiple locations around the country; however, I did visit one local nursery that I am including on the list. The places I visited were Lowes, Meijer, Payless, Walmart, and Wasson Nursery. Continue reading to see my rankings/reviews.

*Disclaimer: These are my reviews for these stores at their Muncie, IN location. Locations may vary and selections may vary depending on the season.

5. Meijer

For those of you unfamiliar with Meijer, it is a supermarket similar to a Walmart or a Target, but in my opinion it falls somewhere between the two. Meijer does however have a garden center, so I thought it would be worth it to check out their succulent selection. However, it was not worth going in. They had very few succulents and the majority were already dead. The prices would have probably been fair if the quality was at par, but it was not. That being said, not every towns' Meijer is going to be the same, so if you shop their regularly, go for it and check out what they have, but if not, don't waste your time.

4. Payless

Overall ⭐⭐

Despite being second to last on the list, I wasn't disappointed with Payless. Being more of a grocery store, the fact that it had a selection better than some garden centers is a win. I would have given it 2.5 stars, if I could do half stars. The selection was quite small, but what they had looked decent. Most of the succulents at Payless were on the very small side. So the price is hard to judge when I can't really compare similar sized plants, but the tiny ones were about $3. Finally, the organization was what I would call average, they were easy to find and displayed in the average way. Overall, 2.5 stars.

3. Walmart

Overall ⭐⭐⭐

Walmart is just what I expected. In one word I would describe the succulents as average. Once again, Walmart has a garden center, but unlike Meijer, it has live succulents! The selection is larger than that of Payless as well, but given it has a garden center, that was expected. Depending on the succulents you buy, you can find the lowest prices here for small to averaged sized plants. I bought a small to medium sized one for $2.94. That being said, the quality is also exactly what I would expect, it is a Walmart quality good. The succulents don't look bad but are they the best you can get, no.

2. Lowes

Overall ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Quality ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Organization ⭐⭐⭐

I was pleasantly surprised with the succulents at Lowes. After visiting Menards earlier in the day and finding out they were out of stock, I wasn't expecting much here. But I have to say, the succulent selection here was great. There were plenty of succulents to choose from, with a wide variety of types and sizes. The price was about the same as anywhere else, and I actually bought a small bear paw succulent here for $3.68. The quality of the succulents was much better than any of the previous stores mentioned, and the organization was pleasing to the eye and honestly exciting to me. Overall, I would recommend purchasing your succulents here.

1. Wasson Nursery

Overall ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Selection ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Price ⭐⭐

Quality ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Organization ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wasson Nursery is the local nursery that I visited; there is a location in both Muncie and Fishers, IN. Even if you don't have a Wasson Nursery near you, I would highly recommend checking out the local nurseries where you live. Walking into Wasson I felt like a kid in a candy store. The look of it was so satisfying, and there were succulents displayed all around. All sizes and ample different types; perfect for any succulent buyer. The prices were also very fair. I was expecting the nursery to be higher priced, and while it was somewhat, for the sizes I got, I thought $4.99 and $6.99 were not bad. The quality was the best around and like I mentioned earlier, the organization gave the whole building an awesome feel. 5 stars, awesome nursery, highly recommend checking out a local nursery near you.
